What is a Golf Handicap?
There are many beginner golf players today that play the game of golf on a regular basis
and have no idea what it means when a person says that they have a golf handicap of
whatever. Every person who plays golf has a handicap. Some people have a good
handicap but there are others that have a bad handicap. Does this mean that they play golf
well or do they play badly? To begin playing golf well you need to understand all the
basics and this includes knowing what a golf handicap is and more specifically what your
exact handicap is. A golf handicap has been defined as the numerical measure of a
person's golfing ability. The handicap is used for amateur golf players.
In order to understand what this definition you need to understand what this number
means. The handicap is used to tell the golfer how many strokes they get to take off their
scores to produce a net score. The handicap is used so that people are in tournaments are
grouped with people who have a similar golfing ability. This is great for people just
starting out as they will have the chance to play against people at their own level and they
won't be paired with someone who's golf skill outshine their own.
It has been said that people with a low or small handicap play golf better than those
whose handicap is high. Calculating the handicap that each golfer has seems hard but
most golf courses will give you a sheet that allows you to calculate the handicap as you
go along. For more professional players, their handicaps are calculated by the course that
they are playing on or by the national golf association. This makes it a little easier but
once you have calculated your handicap a few times then you will feel more comfortable
with it and you will find it easy.
