All About Birding Scopes
For anyone who is truly a bird watching enthusiast, a birding scope is simply a must have item. It takes birding to a higher level. With that said though, there are some things you will want to be aware of before buying any type of scope.
A birding scope is great because it lets you see the details on any bird up close and personal. The scope is also much more effective than your average pair of binoculars.
When you begin looking for a scope you will want one that is lightweight and not cumbersome to try and carry with you. Another key aspect of any scope used for bird watching is its aiming abilities. This is also where you'll need to make a choice.
When it comes to birding scopes you have your choice between the standard straight scope and the angled scope. The straight scope has been around for years, but it is not the preferred choice of birders. Here's why.
With a straight scope, you are forced to look at any bird straight on. If the bird flies away you are left with trying to keep up with it, which can prove to be nearly impossible.
With an angled scope you have the ability to rotate the scope on its mount, which results in a nice wide view of the entire area where the bird is flying.
The angled birding scope is also much easier to handle and operate. You do not have to adjust your body to the scope so to speak.
A good example of this would be spotting a bird of particular interest up in a tree. With a straight scope you may have difficulty with the height of your tripod, etc. But, the angled scope allows you to rotate it and not lose sight of the bird. There is no need of trying to adjust the height. This lets people of any height be able to quickly see the action.
It is for these reasons, among others, that most bird watchers prefer to have an angled birding scope. It just makes things that much more fun. And isn't that what it's all about anyway?
