The squeaky wheel may get the grease, but a squeaky hinge on your cabinets may result in you shopping for replacement hinges. If you keep your kitchen up, looking like a show model all the time, there is not much more annoying than the kitchen seeming to mock you, by squeaking each time you open a cabinet.
Squeaks happen. They're natural, but that doesn't mean you have to live with them. When you first hear the squeaky door hinge, you need to decide what is causing it. Maybe it really does need some grease. Squirt a little WD40 in there and see if that solves the problem. If not, maybe one of the screws has come a little loose. Grab a screw driver and tighten them up to see if that makes a difference. Only tighten them as far as they need to go, don't keep twisting thinking you'll make it stop squeaking if you tighten the screw enough, that's only going to hurt your cabinet surface. If these solutions don't work, it's time to go on a hunt for replacement hinges.
The instinct many people have when going to get replacement hinges is just to go to the store and see what gets their attention. This is alright if you are planning a complete overhaul of your cabinets, but if you're not, you need to make sure you have the right hinges for the job so you don't end up having to fill old holes, drill new holes and repaint or refinish the cabinets
Take the squeaky door off its hinges. If you haven't done this before, it is relatively easy. For smaller cabinet doors, you can just remove the hinge with a screwdriver, for larger, pin hinges, you will need a flat-head screwdriver to pop the pin out to get the door to come off. If it's sticking, you can lightly tap the back of the screwdriver with a hammer to loosen the pin. Once you have gotten the door down, you will need to use a screwdriver to remove the hinge pieces. Put at least one of the hinges in your pocket to take on your shopping expedition.
As you look for replacement hinges there are a few things to keep in mind. If the door hinges you are replacing are from a cabinet, do you want to change all the cabinet hinges out? If not, you need to look for replacement hinges that match the ones you removed, or you will have a tacky set of cabinets where everyone knows which ones are the replacement hinges. If its individual door replacement hinges you're looking for, you have a little more flexibility, but still want to make sure the hinges you select go with the rest of the room décor.
After selecting your replacement hinges, take them home, and install them. Open and close the door a few times. That silence you hear is your victory over the squeak of a worn out hinge.
